There is more violence in schools than has been reported and that parents don't really know what happens to their children inside those schools. May 23, 2006.

A recent audit in New York Schools has shown that most officials from the NY schools hide real data about the violence registered in their schools.

The reason? A law adopted in 2000 allows the parents to move their children from schools considered dangerous because of the violence registered in their area. According to the audit, the school authorities don't report incidents ranging from minor disruptions to sexual offenses to the state.

The stunning conclusion is that there is more violence in schools than has been reported and that parents don't really know what happens to their children inside those schools.

The investigation revealed that some of the districts in New York failed to report more than 80% of the violent incidents happened between 2003 and 2004.

Most probable cause of these events is the innapropriate categorization of some violent incidents. The auditor that conducted the investigation also said that the state Education Department is responsible for problems with enforcing the law, which has been labeled from the beginning as confusing.

On the other hand, administrators have said reporting is time-consuming. Districts have worried that reporting would vary between districts, and some minor incidents that had to be reported could lead to a false impression certain schools are dangerous. Due to the underreporting, some school districts that should be labeled as "persistently dangerous" are not, the audit said.

The label is based on the number and severity of incidents in a two-year period, and it requires schools to develop incident-reduction plans. Another consequence is that the schools considered dangerous are likely to be more than reported or expected.

* 51% of graduating high school seniors admit having used illicit drugs by the time they reach their senior year of high school.
